I think I made a wise deal today...

I stopped into my bank today and asked if they had silver dollars or some half dollars, after the teller went to ask the other tellers if they had any coinage, then he went to check in the back. He came out holding a heavy duty black plastic bag, $101.00 Kennedy Half Dollars. 50% of them are 1971-1976, 10% 1977-1979, 20% from 1980's and about 20% from the 1990's.

I grabbed about half of what they had and they are holding on to the rest for me till next week. From some quick price checking it looks like the cheapest they would be worth is $1.50 each.

I'm wondering if I should turn around and sell them to buy more .999 silver and/or a little bit of gold coinage, or just hold on to them?

Those clad halves are worth exactly $0.50 each. How did you determine that they are worth $1.50 each or more???

Why are they worth anything beyond .50 cents each?

According to your dates given, they are all clad...None are silver, (either 40% or 90%).

What is the fascination?

I recently took $700 worth of these identical to what you have, to the bank and bought Yamana gold stock and am up $1000 on it.

Am I missing something? :no_ma:

Well can ya tell I'm new to buying coins...:banghead: I checked a book I had just scanned the dates real quick. I didn't know they were clad :bawling:. Oh well I'll just bring them to the coin shop next time I buy silver.

Oh well,

Invest heavily in the Barack Obama coins.

First time around, it's a learning lesson.

Second time, it's a deliberate mistake.

Be patient son and don't make the second one.

Good hunting.

Maranatha,

The prices you saw in that book were for Mint State (MS-XX) halves. Recent circulated coins are worth face value only, no sense in taking them to a coin shop.

For some reason the bicentennial coins (1976) go for more than face value on ebay. If there is a roll of the 1976 halves you might be able to sell those and make a couple of dollars, but not much more.
